The New & Improved SCCAP Listserv

The New & Improved SCCAP Listserv

By Ana M. Ugueto, PhD, ABPP
SCCAP Listserv Manager

The SCCAP Listserv is consistently ranked as one of the most important member benefits of SCCAP. Members appreciate the exchange of ideas and resources, connecting with other child and adolescent psychologists across the country, and learning about open student/faculty positions as well as upcoming educational activities and events. SCCAP is committed to fostering a community that supports all members. When posting to the listserv, please use respectful, civil, and inclusive language so the listserv is a place where every member feels safe, valued, and welcome.

New SCCAP Listserv Subject Labeling

Every year, there are hundreds of posts and replies on the SCCAP Listserv. There is so much important information posted on the Listserv it can be difficult to know which posts to focus on and which to ignore! Additionally, the ability to find relevant posts can be tedious.  Based on feedback from members, we developed a new labeling system to help members identify different types of posts. Starting this year, the SCCAP Listserv will encourage members to use specific labels in the title of their messages. Labels allow members to search listserv emails more easily, focus on what they are most interested in, and quickly identify programs and information from SCCAP, APA, or outside agencies and institutions.

The proposed labels include:

  • Positions Open – Student: All graduate student, research assistant, post-doctoral fellow job/student postings.
  • Position Open – Professional: All professional/faculty job postings. Members are also encouraged to post job openings on the SCCAP Career Center
  • Education – SCCAP: All educational activities and/or continuing education events sponsored by SCCAP. This includes webinars, information about Leadership Education to Advance Diversity Institute (LEAD), Clinical Practice Institute (CPI), Future Directions Forum, etc.
  • Education – External: All educational activities and/or continuing education events not sponsored by SCCAP. (Please note only non-profits or agencies providing free educational activities are allowed to advertise).
  • Consultation: Members seeking professional resources or consultation about a specific topic or problem, and members in search of services or psychologists in other cities/states.
  • APA News: Any news, updates, or upcoming events from APA. This includes information about the APA annual convention, policy updates, advocacy, awards and grants, etc.
  • SCCAP Event: Any programs originated or sponsored by the SCCAP board or an SCCAP sponsored committee. This includes notifications about awards, appointed and elected positions, board statements, SIG programming, webinars, CPI, LEAD and SCCAP Conference, etc.

Managing your SCCAP Listserv Subscription

There are three ways to receive your Listserv messages:

1. Regular – with a “regular” subscription, you receive individual postings immediately as they are processed by LISTSERV.

2. Digest (Traditional) or Digest (HTML format) – with a “digest” subscription, you receive a compilation of individual messages inside one email (called “digests”) at regular intervals, usually once per day or once per week. These “digests” are collections of individual list postings. Some lists are so active that they produce several digests per day. Digests are a good compromise between reading everything as it is posted and feeling overwhelmed by the multitude of individual postings. There are two digest formats: a “traditional”, text-only format; and an HTML format, which requires an HTML mail client.

3. Index (Traditional) or Index (HTML format) – with an “index” subscription, you receive short “index” messages at regular intervals, usually once per day or once per week. These “indexes” show you what is being discussed on the list, without including the text of the individual postings. For each posting, the date, the author’s name and address, the subject of the message, and the number of lines is listed. You can then download messages of interest from the server (the index contains instructions on how to do that). An index subscription is ideal if you have a slow connection and only read a few hand-picked messages. The indexes are very short and you do not have to worry about long download times. The drawback of course is that you need to reconnect to retrieve messages of interest from the server. You can choose to have the index sent to you in either a traditional format (plain text) or in HTML format with hyperlinks.

Members can manage their own subscription by visiting https://sccap53.org/members-portal/sccap-community/apa-listserv/ or by emailing the Listserv Manager at   sccap53list@sccap53.org and asking for their listserv settings to be changed.

Key SCCAP Listserv Rules

The main requirement of using the SCCAP Listserv is “respect.”  Please be respectful when seeking professional consultation, sharing a different viewpoint, and posting about open positions, regardless of career stage. Respectful communication creates a safe place for all members so SCCAP Listserv can remain a valuable tool for students and professionals.

A few key rules to follow that preserve the non-profit status of APA and SCCAP:

  1. No electioneering or political calls to action.
  2. No self-promotion, private-gain, or sale of your services or products. (If someone else posts a question about finding a resource, you can mention your book, test, services, etc. but you should NOT include where this product can be purchased.)
  3. Do not solicit research subjects for any research projects, including theses and dissertations. This violates the APAGS guidelines.

For a full review of SCCAP Listserv rules, please read the rules on the website.  Rules reminders are also listed at the bottom of each listserv post. Remember, listservs are a public forum.  There is no expectation of privacy. Members who violate the listserv rules will be contacted privately.  SCCAP has a process for suspending and reinstating members from the listserv.

Non-renewing members are deleted from all SCCAP sponsored listservs each year on February 1.

Members may unsubscribe from the listserv by selecting “unsubscribe” at the bottom of any listserv message.

If you have any questions or want to share ideas, please contact Ana M. Ugueto, PhD, ABPP (SCCAP Listserv Manager) at sccap53list@sccap53.org.
